Dasara or Vijayadashami is celebrated with great frevor in Coorg. This ten days festival is celebrated in Gonikoppa, Virajpet and Madikeri but Madikeri tops the celebrations and seconds the Mysore Dasara in Karnataka. Madikeri Dasara has a history of over 100 years.
Madikeri Dasara starts off with Kargas from four Mariamma Temples. There will be a procession of 10 Mantapas from 10 Temples on the night of Vijayadashami. Ten uniquely decorated tablo or dasha mantapa procession, orchestra, local games, cultural events and takes place during evening till morning. The tablos are the major attraction of Madikeri Dasara and there will be tight competition among the committee members to build the best tablo and to get the prize which is considered as a prize of status.
The Kodagu Cultural Committee organizes the cultural programs and activities at several places in the district. Idols based on many historical and mythological figures are built and worshipped during the ten days. As the festival nears the tenth day the celebrations gets more live with orchestra, dancers and traditional folklores.
