Mahouts on strike in Dubare Elephant camp

Mahouts at the Dubare Elephant Camp in Kushalnagar went on strike on Friday against the government to confirm their services. Twenty mahouts and assistants protested by sending 16 camp elephants into the forest and denying to work. The Mahouts alleged that of the 26 mahouts working with the Forest Department in the camp, the services of 10 were yet to be regularized but the Government had not confirmed the services of 10 mahouts.

Dubare was almost empty as visitors could not take the boat ride to cross the river as the boat were also halted due to the strike.

H.C.Nagaraj claims Madikeri Fort as his Property. The Mysore based flour mill owner H.C.Nagaraj is approaching court to claim the ownership of Madikeri Fort which houses most of the government offices including the Deputy Commissioner’s.

Nagaraj who calls himself as H.C.N.Wodeyar, Maharaja of Coorg, and owner of the Madikeri palace has a family tree certified by a court. His lineage, according to it starts from Queen Devammaji, wife of Lingaraja. His link develops from one of the sons of the queen Devammaji. He accused the district administration of ignoring him and threatening to call police if he forces them to vacate the Fort. Nagaraj had been appealing them to give a portion of the Fort to him, or at least hang his picture on the wall.

113th Birth Anniversary of FM Cariappa Celebrated in Coorg

The 113th birth anniversary of Field Marshal K M Cariappa was celebrated in great splendor in Madikeri on Saturday the 28th this month. The anniversary celebration was organised by the Kannada and Culture department, Field Marshal Cariappa Forum and Karnataka Kodava Sahithya Academy.

Indian Army South zone Chief Lt General A.K Singh, Cariappa’s son Nanda Cariappa, his wife Meena and NCC cadets were present at the anniversary along with few ministers and a large crowd of people.

Strom Music Festival Kicks off in Coorg

The much anticipated ‘Storm Music Festival,’ opened on Friday at Napoklu in Coorg. The music festival which was supposed to begin in November last year was postponed due to heavy rains in Coorg. There was an overwhelming response from the crowd who had come from all over the world to witness this event.

The music fest was opened to the tunes of Kodava Valaga, the traditional Kodava music by the Venkateshwara Vadhya Goshti a 9 member Kodava music band in Coorg. The crowd was stunned to the local band’s performance as they played only with the traditional Valaga, Tabala and drums without using any electronic instruments.

The Eco-friendly steps taken up by the organizers and the facilities set up at the Storm Music Festival was appreciated by the crowd and the bands. Trash cans were placed to prevent people from littering the venue and a separate gallery was set up for drinkers and smokers.

Flower Show in Boikeri near Madikeri

Coorg Hockey Festival 2012

The 16th edition of the Kodava hockey festival in Coorg will commence from April 21st and end on May 13th this year in Ammathi. The Ichetttira family will be organising this year’s Kodava family cup hockey tournament.

Around 250 teams and over 3 lakh people are expected to witness this tournament.

Coorg Overtakes Munnar as a Tourist Destination

Coorg has overtaken Munnar in Kerala as a tourist destination as per the with Karnataka and Kerala tourism departments. According to the tourism departments figures in 2010, Coorg had 5,94,467 tourists among which 7,251 were foreign tourists and Munnar had 2,45,438 tourists.

Until November 2011, Coorg saw a leap in tourist numbers with over 15 lakh visitors. With lot of developments happening in Coorg to attract visitors the number is expected to grow in coming days.

With all this developments and promotions for tourism the authorities and people are also concerned about the commercialization and exploitation of natural resources.

Madikeri Gaddige gets a facelift

The Madikeri Urban Development Authority (MUDA) has prepared a plan to develop four acres of land around Gaddige into a landscape garden at a cost of 45 lakhs.

Gaddige will also include a children’s play park and also statues of elephants will be placed on platforms. The area around Gaddige has been fenced off and the main entrance has been renovated.

Gaddige will be the second botanical garden after Raja Seat in Coorg.

Railway Line to Coorg Soon !!!

Coorg district will soon get railway line- assured the state railways Minister K.H. Muniyappa during his visit to Bhagamandala and Talakaveri.

A survey will be conducted for the 110 K.ms Mysore-Kushlanagar railway line before the launch. The minister also launched the railway line survey work at Kushalnagar and inaugurated India post passenger reservation centre at Kushalnagar post office established by south western railways. This is the second counter in the district after Madikeri.
